Air Canada has today decided that they must suspend new Aeroplan Family Sharing accounts due to rampant fraud.
The suspension doesn’t affect existing accounts within the Family Sharing environment, and Aeroplan hopes to relaunch the functionality in a few weeks.
You can access Air Canada Aeroplan here.
Note we received from Air Canada:
Due to a spike in misuse related to Family Sharing we’ve suspended the ability to create new Family Sharing accounts, including by telephone with an Aeroplan representative.
This is temporary and won’t affect existing Family Sharing accounts – including the ability to add and remove members.
We know how important this feature is for our members, so rather than making knee-jerk changes, we’re taking the time to address this the right way. This may take several weeks, but our goal is to restore the ability to create new Family Sharing accounts as soon as possible
Conclusion
Unfortunately, these features that benefit many families or friend groups also attract fraudsters, which I assume means taking over dormant accounts and draining them from points.
Family Pooling accounts with airlines are great for those that don’t fly frequently and cannot collect enough miles for reasonable awards. You can then pool up the miles with someone/others and use them in a beneficial way rather than merchandise rewards that are usually awful value.
